For generations, people in Arnhem Land have used plants for food, fire, cooking, medicine, timber, fibre, tools and fish poison. The old people handed down a deep understanding of seasons, environments and the connections between all living things. Today, people continue to share this knowledge with their children and grandchildren.
This book brings together plant names from languages spoken in Maningrida, Warruwi and Kunbarlanja, with short stories that show how people use these plants on Country. The book presents original artworks by Graham Balang Rostron, depicting plants from his country. Plants of our Country is a practical resource that supports the next generation to learn about plants and why they are important.
The book is also a field guide to the plants of Arnhem Land. It contains photographs and descriptions of over 100 plants, including seasonal information. It is aimed at a wide range of readers, including local people in West Arnhem Land, school students, teachers, rangers, researchers, nature lovers and visitors to the region.
